Reconstituting Lyophilised Research Peptides: The Basics

Almost every peptide we supply arrives as a lyophilised (freeze-dried) powder. Before it can be used at the bench it's reconstituted — brought into solution. This is a general, educational overview; always defer to your own laboratory protocols and risk assessments.

What you reconstitute with

The standard diluent is bacteriostatic water — sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol. The benzyl alcohol lets a vial be accessed more than once while limiting microbial growth, which is why it's preferred over plain sterile water for multi-use research vials.

The general approach

• Let the sealed vial reach room temperature before opening.
• Add the chosen volume of bacteriostatic water slowly down the inside wall of the vial, not directly onto the powder.
• Let the powder dissolve on its own or with a gentle swirl — avoid shaking, which can stress delicate peptides.
• Label the vial with the compound, concentration and date once reconstituted.

Working out concentration

The volume of water you add sets the concentration: a larger volume gives a more dilute solution, a smaller volume a more concentrated one. After reconstitution

Reconstituted peptide solutions are generally less stable than the dry powder. They're typically kept refrigerated, protected from light, and used within a tested window. Minimising freeze–thaw cycles helps preserve integrity.
